Nashville singer-songwriter Tom Kimmel writes, “Paddy Dougherty is as real a deal as they come. She doesn’t have to work to pull you in; she just sings and you’re already there because you can feel her heart in every song, and her voice is the voice of an angel, an angel who’s lived a little, and knows what’s going on.”

After a successful career as backup singer for national bluesman David Bromberg, Paddy formed her own award winning band Mainstreet Rhythm & Blues and later turned to songwriting, recording and performing with various musicians. Several of her songs have been arranged for full orchestra by legendary hit maker Charlie Calello. These scores were debut in 2005 with the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra in a concert with Rita Coolidge and again in 2006 at City Stadium before a hometown crowd of nearly 5000.

“I feel like I’ve done my career in reverse. With Bromberg we played the national circuit, (Wolf Trap, The Bottom Line, Iron Horse, Birchmere) the major festivals and clubs up and down the east coast. With Mainstreet we targeted a regional audience with cover tunes so I could be close to home while raising my children. Once I turned to writing everything shifted. I gladly gave up the larger venues and big sounds for the intimacy of a small listening room or concert hall. I’ve been working with master string players lately and feel really good about that direction. We are currently arranging songs for recording and have plans to perform new scores with a full orchestra.”

In addition to performing, Paddy promotes the efforts of children’s compositions through the national award-winning songwriting program Kid Pan Alley. “Empowering children through song is most rewarding. I strongly believe that we will never be able to test or buy our way out of our problems. Solutions will come when we expand our minds and think creatively for the good of all and you’d be amazed at what’s on the minds of our young people. They write incredibly powerful songs.”

Joining Paddy in concert Saturday, June 5th will be Daniel Kepel-Young on violin/viola, Eric Hollandsworth on bass/cello, Glenn Buck on keyboard/sax and Bill Purcell on drums.

“I’m so excited to be performing in the intimacy of The Whole Note with Daniel, Eric, Glenn & Billy. They play from that magical soul spot that brings the songs to life in a beautiful new way. There is an ease and clarity when we perform together. It takes me back to the moment and the reason the songs were written.”

Dave Morgan has been a professional musician for 45 years. As a vocalist, drummer and vibraphonist he has played many styles of music: funk, jazz, Dixieland, country, rock and pop. He worked for such people as Bob Hope, Phil Harris, Guy Lombardo, Marvin Stamm, Randy Carmichael (Hoagy’s son), Royce Campbell, Hodd O’Brien, and internationally known pianist and composer Dick Hyman. Dave was also recording studio staff drummer doing jingle work as well as albums with Sandy Patti and radio personalities Bob and Tom, and many others. Dave decided in the early nineties that he wanted to breakout on his own and focus on the music of his heart. He wanted to sing tunes that he felt personally drawn to and he wanted to study vibraphone seriously in order to have another musical voice. Dave has played in NC, VA, WVA and TN in many different venues. He has played with small groups in local clubs and restaurants, as well as at the Homestead and led his own group at the Greenbrier resort. He has performed with the Bluefield State Big Band, Roanoke Jazz Orchestra and been on the road with the Russ Morgan and Frankie Lester and the Don Edwards Orchestras. Dave has also taught privately and been a clinician in local colleges and public schools. With his own group Dave has performed in jazz festivals and jazz concerts in VA and NC.  For the past six years he has been a regular artist for the Highlands jazz festival working with Lynn Roberts and the Blue Ridge Jazz Ensemble. In July, 2008 Dave performed in the Bluemont Music Series.  In the past ten years, Dave has been working the winter Florida circuit, playing the concert tours of Hopkins and Miller; as well as jobs with such musicians as Carl McVicker (bassist for Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood), the Uptown Singers (Washington, DC), Kenny Drew, Jr., the Leon Marion big band, as well as the University of South Florida Alumni Jazz Ensemble. He was the featured artist with the Lenny Wilson Trio at The Villages. In March, 2008 Dave was guest artist with the Al Hixon band for the Sarasota Jazz Club.  He also played for the Royal Palm Players in a show called “S’Wonderful” starring Lynda Jamison in Boca Grande.Dave released his debut CD playing drums and vibes as well as singing, thereby incorporating all of his talents. Three D in Blue has been well received being played in cities throughout the country. He has also performed on the CD’s of several artists.

Great River Jazztet

Friday, August 14, 2009, 7:30pm
The Whole Note Performance Club

jazztet_copy_400_01The Great River Jazztet will be coming to the Whole Note to share their unique jazz experience. The jazztet plays both standards and original compositions, all involving unique arrangements and improvisational ideas. With their experience in bebop, cool, swing, latin, funk, and blues, they combine their years of playing jazz and their ability of listening to one another to create exciting and innovative on the spot compositions.

Scott Walter plays both piano and trumpet and is often found playing them both at the same time providing rich chordal flavors, provoking melodies and tonal imagery.  Billy “B.J.” Purcell on drums, provides driving tempos, interesting rhythms, and colorful percussive backdrops. Eric Hollandsworth, contributes the rich tones of acoustic upright bass with moving jazz lines, funky rhythms, and expressive low end support. John Winnicki, on electric guitar, adds his understanding of rhythms and classic jazz chording, along with driving solos, all coming together to provide the unique sound  of the Great River Jazztet.

These four musicians are bringing their improvisational jazz to the Whole Note on Friday, August 14, 2009, at 7:30pm. The Great River Jazztet’s CD Contemplation will be on sale at the performance. Mark your calendars and join the Whole Note as we present an evening of jazz with the Great River Jazztet.
